Whole home rewiring in Southwestern Washington is always a sizable job. That’s just a fact of life when you replace the “main arteries” of your home’s electrical system. But even with this in mind, some projects are more challenging than others.
That was certainly the case for the project Randy S. and his wife had in mind. Not too long ago, the retired couple purchased a home built way back in 1930.
In the intervening years, the building’s electrical wiring had been redone in a hodgepodge manner that left it unsuited for modern use.

Whole home rewiring is a big step for any homeowner. It requires the removal of all the outdated wiring hidden behind your walls. It also requires the replacement of that wiring with modern, electrically safe materials.

In Randy’s Southwestern Washington home, the main issue was old wiring. But that wasn’t the only concern.
“We just purchased a 1930 house and updated all the electrical. We had knob and tube mixed in with updated over the years wiring. We also added numerous items like heaters, fans, lights, and outlets. We are retired and this is our final house.”
A Jumble Of Electrical Wiring Components And Capacities
Over the years, the home’s electrical system had been upgraded. But the older, outdated components weren’t fully replaced. Instead, each new upgrade left at least some of these components intact.
The result was a jumble of electrical technologies. That included knob-and-tube wiring that was already on its way out when the home was built. It also included relatively modern wiring that was nevertheless past the 40-year window for reliable use.
The resulting patchwork was not only unsafe. It left the building with limited electrical capacity. This was a big problem, since Randy and his wife wanted to make home updates that would increase the day-to-day electrical load.

Easing Concerns And Prepping For The Rewiring Project
Randy has a history of working in the building trades. So, he knew before contacting anyone that his Southwestern Washington residence needed some serious TLC.
When Emerge Electrical got the call, Randy was clearly concerned about the size of the project, as well as its potential cost. Per our normal procedure, we drove out to the home and inspected it. When we were done, we gave him an estimate for the required work.
Along the way, we assured Randy that the job could be done properly at a reasonable cost. We also answered his questions regarding our plan for achieving his desired goals. Randy’s concerns were duly eased, and we scheduled a convenient time for the multi-day undertaking to begin.
Mapping Out Randy’s Maze Of An Electrical System
The first step in Emerge Electrical’s whole home rewiring plan was mapping out the existing system in full detail. Frankly, this wasn’t easy.
To get the job done, we had to identify each progression in the home’s complicated wiring history. We also had to determine where each technology in that progression connected with what came before and after it.
There was a further complicating factor. Some of the wiring in Randy’s home had been installed fairly recently and was in excellent working condition. We wanted to preserve this wiring wherever possible to avoid waste and unnecessary project expenses.

Removing And Replacing Electrical Wires And Outlets
Next, it was time to remove the outdated parts of the system. The focus was on the wiring itself. In addition, we had to remove a few outdated electrical outlets.
When this task was completed, we ran new wiring behind the walls of Randy’s home. We also upgraded the home’s electrical capacity so he and his wife could add powered household items such as lights, heaters, and fans. In addition, we updated the building’s existing outlets and added a few new ones.
